Our first trip to Pyramid Lake was in 2019 and we’ve had groups there every year since (sometimes more than 1 group). The lake is a unique fishery and the resident Lohanton Cutthroat trout are available in very limited fisheries so this is a chance to take on a fish that most folks will never see. And the fish at Pyramid are far and away larger than the Lohantons anywhere else in their range. The lake is on Paiute Reservation just north of Reno. Our outfitter has years of experience at the lake and will take care of providing “ladders” (think more of a portable deer stand, it will have a casting platform so you can stand and stretch your legs and a swivel seat so you’re not standing all day), a light breakfast, a hot shore lunch and they also have loaner rods/reels if you don’t have appropriate gear. There is very limited lodging at the lake, as well as a great deal of camping access. We will arrange for our own lodging (it is not required that the whole group stay together, sometimes we do and sometimes we don’t) Typically we stay in Reno/Sparks (Fernley is also and option can be a 5 to 20 minute shorter drive to the lake, depending on where in Reno/Sparks you stay). Staying in town allows for the greatest flexibility in lodging and dinner options. Also, there is a lot to do in Reno if you want to bring along a non-fishing companion or extend your stay beyond just our fishing time. The Reno area is high desert so we don’t typically see much snow or rain, and it is more common in town than at the lake. Being February expect cooler weather, but I have yet to experience bitter cold. The lowest temps I’ve seen there have been low/mid 30’s and I have had trips where afternoons were in the 70’s and sunburns were a concern. The fishing of course varies year to year, but this is almost certainly your best opportunity to hook and 10 pound or larger trout. We haven’t broken the 10lb barrier every year, but some years people in the group have caught multiple 10lb fish each day. The largest fish anyone in one of our groups has landed was a 26-1/2 pound cutthroat. If you’re looking for convenient travel (there are many flights into the Reno Airport and I-80 runs right through town if you prefer to drive), lots of food/lodging options, lots of entertainment beyond the fishing and the possibility of catching the largest trout of your life this may be the trips for you!
